Welcome to the 2008 CML annual conference
What an extraordinary year. Many months ago, when we chose “After the storm” as the title of this year’s conference, we carefully avoided giving a prediction about whether this would reflect a review of past events by December 2008, or a look ahead to the future. We knew things were tough, but we did not know then quite how tough the year would prove to be for so many of our members.
It’s been an annus horribilis for the mortgage industry as a whole. Lenders appear to be damned if they do and damned if they don’t (lend, that is). Banks, building societies and specialist lenders alike have undergone mergers and portfolio fire sales, and some are no longer lending. Broker firms have been shedding staff and closing down. Consumers have seen a reduction in choice and availability of deals, and the Government has made well-intentioned but confusing statements about both pricing, and about an expectation of the recapitalised banks making lending available to home-buyers “at 2007 levels”.
Against this backdrop, welcome to our annual conference.
